Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto state has expressed his joy for the new vision of the Nigerian army, which has opened room for families of officers and men of the army to be gainfully engaged in skills acquisition.
The governor stated this when he inaugurated an installed 2.5MVA, renovated officers' mess and take-off of skills acquisition programme for officers and men's wives at the headquarters of the Brigade Command in Sokoto on Wednesday.
"Apart from the responsibility of fighting wars to protect Nigeria's integrity, the Nigerian army has opened other fronts to avail the society the needed means of livelihoods," Tambuwal said adding, "the families of army officers ought to live conformable lives even during war times."
He urged the Federal Government "to equip the army and other security agencies with state-of-the-art equipment in order to efficiently and effectively to fight insurgency."
The Governor stressed that the recent disclosures about the ill-equipped army in the past years had vindicated the National Assembly. "What is happening now about Nigerian army's hitherto incapacitation to fight the Boko Haram insurgency, has vindicated the earlier position of the National Assembly."
He commended the Sokoto 1 Brigade Command for, not only creating the opportunity for wives of officers and men of the army but also wives of the civilian, to be trained on various fields of small-scale enterprises.
Tambuwal disclosed that the state government was planning to establish a bank for Sokoto women to access micro finance loans.
Earlier, the outgoing Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Chikezie Ude commended Sokoto state government for the cordial relationship that existed between the command and the people of the state.
On his part, the new Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Oluwafunmilayo Soleye promised to sustain the cordial relationship.
